Photogeometric Cues to Perceived Surface Shading (Current Biology)

It is known that shading is a cue to three-dimensional shape, but it is unknown how the visual system determines when an image contains shading. Marlow et al. show that there are photogeometric constraints along bounding contours of shaded surfaces that the visual system uses to distinguish shading from other sources of intensity gradients.
