Glutamine Metabolism Regulates Proliferation and Lineage Allocation in Skeletal Stem Cells (Cell Metabolism)

Skeletal stem cells (SSCs) provide a reservoir of bone-forming osteoblasts throughout life. Yu et al. investigate glutamine metabolism in SSCs. Glutamine-derived ?-ketoglutarate supports amino acid biosynthesis and proliferation in SSCs. Inhibiting glutamine metabolism in SSCs results in low bone mass and increased marrow adiposity in mice.
