[Editorial] Recalibrating emergency care in the UK (Lancet Oncology)
 


In January, 2015, the UK National Health Service (NHS) reported a record number of patients using accident and emergency (A&E) departments, which led to several hospitals declaring `major incident` status. This status meant cancelling outpatient services and non-essential surgeries (including cancer-related operations) as well as alerting neighbouring hospitals to help handle the demand.
