The human microbiome is a promising niche from which bacterial secondary metabolites have begun to be identified using various natural product discovery approaches. In this Review, Milshteyn et al. describe these methodologies and their role in mapping microbe-microbe and host-microbe interactions that may lead to developments of new therapeutic modalities.
