Mapping the Whole-Body Muscle Activity of Hydra vulgaris (Current Biology)
 


Using calcium imaging in Hydra, Szymanski and Yuste observe the activity of the entire muscle tissue of a cnidarian animal during behavior, find seven basic patterns of muscle activity, and discover that individual muscle cells are multifunctional, participating in multiple distinct patterns with different kinetics.
