How well do we do in monitoring men on active surveillance (AS) for low-risk prostate cancer? This is a topical question, especially as many AS studies do not report adherence rates to AS monitoring protocols [1] and in those that do, adherence rates are often low. Data from Australia reveal that only one in four men comply with AS protocols according to a quite generous definition of adherence [2]. While this not matter terribly much for many men with low-risk prostate cancer, it may for some; and certainly it may matter for men who are being offered AS with more unfavourable, intermediate-risk prostate cancer.
