Heat Shock Factor 1 Is a Direct Antagonist of AMP-Activated Protein Kinase (Molecular Cell)

Su et al. uncover an intriguing mutual antagonism whereby energy homeostasis and proteomic stability intertwine. While AMPK inactivates HSF1 via phosphorylation, HSF1 reciprocally suppresses AMPK by physically enforcing an inactive conformation. Thereby, HSF1 imposes a new layer of regulation on AMPK that affects lipid metabolism, protein cholesteroylation, and tumor growth.
