How does Sirtuin-1 achieve neuroprotection? By studying SCA7, an inherited cerebellar degenerative disorder, Stoyas et al. discover that Sirtuin-1 mediates transcriptional activation of calcium regulatory genes in a NAD-dependent fashion, revealing a number of shared therapy targets for cerebellar ataxia.
